COVER STORY
Finances have engendered a new language in academe, including phrases like “strategic priorities” and “available resources.” At George Washington, part-time faculty and administrators disagree about whether or not adjuncts on campus are primarily specialists or faculty essential to undergraduate education. They also disagree about whether or not the newly certified part-time faculty union should be recognized.

PROFILE
If someone had told Becky Villarreal that switching from a career as a secondary school teacher to one as a college teacher would have plunged her into a hotbed of activism, she might have had second thoughts. “Believe it or not, the reason I decided to leave K-12 was that it was too political,” says the 43-year-old, whose recent crusade has made it possible for adjuncts at all Texas community colleges to join the state’s health benefits plan.

SHOPTALK
The University of California has reached a tentative agreement with the University Council-American Federation of Teachers union for a contract extension for lecturers, UC officials announced last week. The agreement, which was announced June 29th, and reached after only eight weeks of negotiation, extends the contract for the UC’s 2,500 lecturers through 2010.

LAST WORD
I am convinced that The American Sociological Association’s leadership, conference organizers, and its members are in denial. I would say that they are in serious need of therapeutic help from their colleagues in the American Psychological Association, but I went to the APA conference after the ASA ’s meeting. The issue of the extensive use of temporary faculty in the teaching of psychology was equally absent from the APA’s program schedule.
